Fixed Design

A part of the mantra I use of late is... “I am of fixed design”.

I have thought about this idea of “fixed design” a lot this week as we have begun to build the stud walls inside our cabins. We only have so many feet of space and that truth colors all our decision.    Fixed Design.

There are certain things that make up who I am and those things I cannot change. For example: I am blessed to walk on two legs. I am blessed to have two eyes and two ears and only one mouth. My Citizenship is in the United States of America. These are all things that are part of my fixed design.  And in many ways they define me.

There are also other, more personal aspects of my fixed design that came from my family of origin and my childhood.

These things inscribed in my soul and I will carry them with me forever.

The Nobel Laureate Daq Hammarskjold is quoted as saying:

We are not permitted to choose the frame of our destiny. But what we put into it is ours.

John Mayer wrote a song, “Is It Always in the Blood?” that perfectly and artistically asks the question:

I can feel the love I want, I can feel the love I need
But it's never gonna come the way I am
Could I change it if I wanted, can I rise above the flood?
Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?

THE question becomes... “will it wash out in the water or is it always in the blood”?

It will take my whole life to understand and color my own “fixed design”.  That is the “Legacy” that was gifted to each of us when we were born.  Our Journey

It is my choice to become wiser in my approach.  To act instead of react.

To leave a different “legacy” for someone to build upon.
