Truth
To be sure, I am not a scientist. I do have a fascination with Sandstone Arches.
In order to create a geologic arch you have to start with the exact right kind of sandstone. One that is more spherical in its nature so that it allows for lots of air. As the landscape changed over millions of years “fins” of just the right limestone remained above the surface, exposed. Water and time worked to erode the limestone from both above and below the surface. To remove all the excess material.
Recently researchers discovered that while the environment is responsible for removing the excess sandstone, the columns are formed by gravity that consolidates sand grains together, creating pillars that are more resistant to erosion.
In other words, erosion is responsible for revealing the truth of the rocks shape, not for shaping the rock itself.
The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop overseeing St. John’s Episcopal church in Washington D.C. spoke about Truth this week on Good Morning America. In her opinion, we are all called to “seek the truth, speak the truth, and abide by the truth”.
I must ask, what is truth? What is the central shape forged by gravity that will reveal itself when all is stripped away?
I suspect it is not the names we like to call ourselves: Christian, Baptist, Church of Christ, Catholic, Episcopalian, Daoist, Budhist, Atheist, Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, etc. Rather, it is hidden in the Verbs we use.
Another blogger I love to read, wildwoman.apothecary, made a list this morning of Verbs: “Truth, Love, and Consciousness. It’s a good place to stop. No more planning. Just being.”
Those are the verbs I hope to make my core shape. I hope those are the words to be used when my friends and family gather to tell stories about my journey.
